A Legacy of Sacrifice: Investing in our Heroes

When many think of Memorial Day it often includes activities like going to the beach, lake, traveling, holiday sales, and even backyard barbecues.  Most importantly, it is a time when families and a country come together to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The freedoms we enjoy in America are never free. It is only because of the sacrifice of those who served that people and small businesses can pursue their dreams. The freedom to access opportunities to build a business and operate free exchange of commerce is rooted in that sacrifice.

At the SBA, we strive to help veterans continue to serve back at home. When many begin their business journey, we reduce as many barriers as possible.  The SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development offers resources and opportunities for veteran-owned small businesses to start, grow and scale. The SBA stands ready to assist veterans as well as spouses of veterans- we want to position entrepreneurs to have a successful business that may be passed down for generations.

As America approaches its 250th birthday (Freedom250),  SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler has launched the Patriot Pitch Competition, a national contest created to celebrate 250 years of American free enterprise and the small businesses that power our economy.

Backed by a $1 million cash prize pool donated by Clover Network, Inc., this competition is open to eligible small businesses that have used qualifying SBA capital products and are helping drive innovation, job creation, and economic growth across the country.

The Patriot Pitch is more than a contest; it is a national stage for the entrepreneurs whose ideas keep our country competitive and resilient. Entries will be judged on how they strengthen American competitiveness, deliver quality jobs, and demonstrate strong execution and financial fundamentals —precisely the traits we should celebrate as we mark 250 years of American enterprise.

Small business owners interested in this opportunity must apply by June 10, with winners selected at a live finals event in Washington, D.C. this September- a fitting setting: in the nation’s capital, just miles from the memorials that bear the names of our fallen, entrepreneurs will step forward to show how they are building the next chapter of American strength and prosperity.

At the SBA, we honor veterans by building support structures for those who carry that same spirit of service. By fostering business friendly environments for veteran business owners, it allows them to support their own local communities, support gold star families, hire veterans, and mentor others.

Let’s always continue to honor and remember the true meaning of Memorial Day, not just through tasty barbecue, but also with prayer and remembrance of those who did not come home.
